The Ducks

Domestic waterfowl may be rehomed because owners may not be able to keep them due to noise or the general husbandry (cleaning/feeding/flock ratio) required. Many domestic ducks are abandoned at Lake Merritt in Oakland, where they do not know how to live in the wild with predators, nor do they have the ability to search for food. We are happy to provide a home for our waterfowl where they can be safe, they don't have to worry about food, and they live with other ducks and geese for bonding.

In October 2023, we had a major tragedy with our flock of 11 waterfowl and a bobcat broke into our enclosure and killed 9 of the waterfowl. We were incredibly crushed by this unfortunate event and continue to modify our enclosure to flex with the adaptable predators in our area.

Alice

Alice was found by a duck rescuer friend who saw there was a flock of Muscovy ducks dumped at lake at Laney College in Oakland, CA. She came to us in April 2024 - thin, poorly nourished, and with completely wet feathers due to lack of oil. As soon as she joined us, her face was in the food bowl for a long time.

Calypso

Calypso is a young female Muscovy duck who met Gigi (female Cayuga mix) at Oakland Animal Services after being found by Animal Control. They came to Oak Rock Animal Preserve in October 2023. Calypso is very shy and scared of humans, but relies on Gigi's confidence to decide how to handle situations. When Gigi came to our sanctuary (with Calypso), it brought new life into Esther and Frida after a bobcat attack.

Eleanor

Eleanor came with Theodore and Franklin, rescued by Wildlife Care Association of Sacramento. She has been with us since January 2024, and loves hanging out with her Muscovy friends as well as wandering around foraging with Theo and Franklin.

Esther

Esther, an adult Muscovy duck, was abandoned at Lake Merritt in Oakland in 2022. Rescuers tried several times to catch her to put her in a safe home, but she has spice and sass and would fly away every time! Unfortunately, the only way she was caught was after she was attacked by a predator at Lake Merritt and needed emergency veterinary care. She came to Oak Rock Animal Preserve in February 2023 needing wound care, rehabilitation, and needed to learn to trust humans (since many times before, she thought she was going to be captured). She and Frida are survivors of a terrible bobcat attack on the flock in October 2023, where 9 waterfowl were killed.

Franklin

Franklin came in Jan 2024 with Theodore and Eleanor, by way of Wildlife Care Association of Sacramento. Franklin's favorite things to do: talk to Theodore, swim with Theodore, chase the girls.

Frida

Frida is an adult female Muscovy who was abandoned at a pond in Oakland. For several years, she lived there with her mate Fred, and a kind duck lover fed both of them twice/day. In August 2023, she came to Oak Rock Animal Preserve due to sudden loss of Fred (he was missing, cause unknown). She was lonely without her beau, so we took her in immediately to give her a safe haven. She loves hanging out with her best friend Esther. She and Esther are survivors of a terrible bobcat attack on the flock in October 2023, where 9 waterfowl were killed.

Gar

Gar is a Muscovy duck who was found by Oakland Animal Services with  fishing line around his tongue. Unable to eat properly, animal control officers took him in where he received care to untangle his tongue and give him food/water. He joined us in April 2024.

Gigi

Gigi is a male Muscovy duck mix who came to us in October 2023 with Calypso, from Oakland Animal Services. He loves eating treats out of our hands, foraging for rocks in the pasture, and following Esther and Frida around. At first glance, Gigi looks like a black duck, but look closely, and you can see green and purple feathering in the sunlight.

Jasmine

Jasmine is a female Muscovy duck who was found in Sacramento wandering around a library. A local duck rescuer took her in, brought her to the vet where she was diagnosed with a parasitic intestinal infection. Her kind rescuer quarantined her and gave her treatments until she made her way to Oak Rock Animal Preserve in Feb 2024. Jasmine loves her new friends and is kind to everyone she encounters - human and duck.

Kara Dean

Kara Dean is a Mallard mix who was being kept as a pet with several other ducklings. The owners couldn't keep all ducklings, and rehomed Kara Dean with us in 2024. She loves to hang out with Theodore and Franklin and play in the water.

Theodore

Theodore came to us in Jan 2024 from WCA of Sacramento. Theodore loves to swim with Franklin, quack with Franklin, and chase girls with Franklin.
