The Foster Animals

Sometimes, in times of high need, we help other rescues or shelters by fostering animals when they need urgent help. Many rescues or shelters get inundated suddenly with animals and their intent is to help as many as they can, as quickly as they can. While our main focus is providing a permanent home for our animals, we feel a strong pull to help our rescue colleagues when they most need us.

CURRENT FOSTERS

Jon Hamm

Jon Hamm came to us as a foster from Oakland Animal Services in November 2024. He runs up to you when you walk by, and wants attention and pets.

Helvetica and Wingdings

"The Fonts" - as we call them - came to us from Oakland Animal Shelter in November 2024 as young male bunnies who were needing a break from shelter life. They love running around in their ex-pens, watching the other bunnies, and seeing what treat we're going to give them.

FORMER FOSTERS

Billy

Billy - a young German Shephered Dog - came to us in October 2024 with a leg injury, and Cal Paws K9 Rescue agreed to get him the surgery he needed (an amputation) to take care of his severe injury. He stayed with us for a few days before the surgery, playing, learning how to walk on 3 legs, and socializing with our kids, dogs, and cat.  He was adopted by a wonderful family in October who named him Typo.

Butterscotch

Oakland Animal Services (OAS) had an influx of rabbits in May 2023, and called upon the community for help housing some of their rabbits. Our sanctuary felt a calling, as we adopted 12 pigeons from OAS in April 2023. We took in Butterscotch, a 1 yr old spayed female American New Zealand, as a foster; she was found as a stray. She is all white except for a butterscotch colored patch of fur on her right and left sides. She is shy at first, but once she got to know us, she'd run out to greet us. She went back to OAS in September 2023 after they had more space to take in rabbits.

Caramel, Fudge and Toffee

These 3 sisters were born in the shelter, to a bunny we'd previously fostered (Butterscotch - who we formerly fostered). They lived in foster care and at the shelter for their whole 1+ yrs of their lives before coming to us in Feb 2024 for foster care. After having a lot of fun playing, running, eating, and getting into trouble with us for 6 months, they left for a rabbit rescue in August 2024.

Carrie and Chuck

Chuck (black) and Carrie (white) are bonded male and female rabbits who are a funny pair! Carrie is about twice Chuck's size, but that doesn't bother either of them. Their favorite activities are sharing treats, and sitting in empty boxes together. They came to us in June 2024, after they'd been returned to the shelter twice, by 2 different families who had life changes that didn't involve having bunnies. They went to Stockton Animal Services in July 2024, to enter their bunny adoption program.

Cheyenne

Cheyenne was a 7 month old female spayed Shepherd mix when we fostered for Underdog Animal Rescue. She was found as a stray in Kings County and brought to the shelter.  She is great with our kids (ages 6-13 yrs), doesn't seem to mind our geese/ducks, and gets along with our dog (13 yr old, 10 lb female dog) and our cat. She is also crate-trained and knows how to sit. Underdog Animal Rescue works hard to bring many shelter dogs from Southern California who may have more opportunity to be adopted in the Bay Area.

Becuause Cheyenne did so well with our family and our animals, we adopted her and she joined the Rankin family to live out the rest of her life!

Dipper

Dipper is a young adult female California mix from Oakland Animal Services. She came to us in September 2023, after OAS wanted to give her a break from the shelter. She was having a hard time adjusting to busy shelter life with all the people and other animals, so we took her to our sanctuary to give her a quiet place to reset and receive attention. She loves to lounge in her litterbox, and is currently working on getting enough confidence to know when to use her litterbox for eliminations and when to use her bed for sleeping. Dipper went back to OAS for medical care after symptoms suspicious of an infection with E. cuniculi, which can affect the brain and kidneys. We are pleased to hear that Dipper's time with us helped her come out of her shell and interact more with people when she returned to OAS. She went to House Rabbit Society after treatments at OAS, so that the rabbit rescue could care for her special needs.

Fantasia Valkyrie (Effie)

Fantasia Valkyrie (Ef-vee, or Effie for short), came to us in July 2024 as a foster for Yggdrasil Urban Wildlife Rescue. YUWR found her injured, and her broken wing and leg limp left her unreleasable back into the wild. Because they wanted to find an alternative for her with California Fish & Wildlife, they asked us to foster her until her future could be solidified. Unfortunately, she passed away unexpectedly in August 2024.

Laurel and Hardy

Laurel and Hardy are 2 spayed female sisters who were found by Oakland Animal Services. Both run up to greet you for pets and attention, and Laurel loves to explore. They came to Oak Rock Animal Preserve in April 2024, and after a break from the shelter, they returned to OAS June 2024 to get in front of adopters.

Mosaiko

Mosaiko is an adult female rabbit who came to Oakland Animal Services pregnant, in November 2023. She went into foster shortly after being spayed, and her foster mom couldn't take care of her anymore, so Oak Rock Animal Preserve took her in as a foster in January 2024. She is a shy bunny, and didn't do well in the shelter, so we're providing her some quiet time and positive interactions to prep her for adoption. Luckily, House Rabbit Society decided to take her in and she left us and OAS in Feb 2024 to be in long-term care with a rescue.

Nox

Nox is a young male neutered rabbit who was found by Oakland Animal Services in November 2023. He was shy at the shelter and needed a break from the hustle and bustle, so we took him in as a foster in January 2024. He loves to watch Mosaiko run around and relax with some quiet time. He left Oak Rock in February 2024, and got adopted that month.

Poe

Poe came to us as a foster from Oakland Animal Services in November 2024. She's outgoing, curious, and such a sweet bunny. She was so cute on her bio photo from OAS that she only stayed with us for 1 week before having an adopter interested in her.

4 Wild Raccoons

These 4 young raccoons were found as orphans by Yggdrasil Urban Wildlife Rescue. YUWR takes in many orphans, has volunteers foster them, then they are released back into the wild. These raccoons arrived at our sanctuary in August 2024. They had escaped the crate during the 1.5 hr ride to us, which made for an exciting start to their adventure with us. They made it safely into their enclosure where they will continued to learn to fend for themselves before release onto our property, and they were released after 2 weeks of conditioning for the wild.

2 wild raccoons

We took in 2 wild young raccoons we were fostering for Yggdrasil Urban Wildlife Rescue in September 2024. We had fostered and released 4 of their littermates the previous month, and our job with the remainder of the litter was to condition them for release to the wild on our property.

Spot

Spot was fostered by Oak Rock Animal Preserve for Oakland Animal Services. She was at OAS for 8 months before we took her in as a foster. She loved to sit and sleep in her hay feeder so she could fall asleep eating, nap, then wake up and eat. She went back to OAS in September 2023 after they had more space to take in rabbits, and was adopted shortly after by someone looking specifically for her breed.

Steph

Steph is a sweet, chubby bunny who was found as a stray in Oakland. She was spayed and vaccinated at Oakland Animal Services, then came to us in August 2024. We introduced her to our bunny Pansy to see if they'd get along, but after 2 months of trying, we decided they weren't meshing well together. Steph returned to OAS in Nov 2024 to be adopted out.

Sweet Pea

Sweet Pea is from Oakland Animal Services, and was returned to the shelter twice for different reasons. We wanted to give her a break from the shelter and give her some stability in a schedule and home, until her perfect family steps up. She came to us in August 2024, and after having a blast with us, returned to OAS in Nov 2024 to be adopted out.

Tangerine and Cantaloupe

Tangerine (left) and Cantaloupe (right) were born at Oakland Animal Services when OAS took in a pregnant female. Their 3rd littermate passed away, but Tangerine and Cantaloupe were raised as fosters and came to us in November 2023. Cantaloupe has been undergoing treatment for pneumonia that we continued when we took her in, and our job was to socialize them till they can be old enough to get  spayed and put out for adoption. They returned to OAS in Jan 2024 to get spayed and get in front of adopters.

Wednesday

Wednesday is a young adult female California mix who we're fostering for OAS. She came in with her littermates (named after the days of the week) after an unintentional breeding, and was surrendered with her litter to OAS. Wednesday loved exploring and jumping on things like chairs or boxes. If you leave a door open, she's sure to explore what's outside the door. She is an outgoing bunny and would jump in your lap when it's feeding time. We love the black heart over her left eye! She returned to OAS Jan 2024 for a bonding date with another bunny, and was immediately adopted.
