In Memoriam
Oak Rock Animal Preserve, and all its animals, is dedicated to Wendi's dad, Eduardo Velando. He immigrated to the US from the Philippines when he was a teenager. In the Philippines, Eduardo grew up with various animals in the family. Because of that, Wendi and her sister grew up with a respect for animals and an inherent kindness towards all species.
Just like we remember Wendi's dad fondly, we lovingly remember all of the animals below, who passed away with us at Oak Rock Animal Preserve.
THE CHICKENS
Daisy Duke
Daisy was a 3 yr old California White hen who started crowing intermittently with her original owner, and came to us in May 2023 with Tulip and Rosebud ("The Flower Girls"). She was put to sleep in August 2024 from an oviductal impaction.
Dewy
Dewy, a brown leghorn hen, came to us in June 2023 as a 3-4 yr old hen. She'd been rescued by her owners as a frail, thin hen who was originally in a flock of 70. Her owner fed her regulary and got her to gain weight. Her small flock of 3 didn't suit Dewy, as she fought with the others, so Dewy was rehomed to Oak Rock Animal Preserve to get her into a bigger flock where she'd be socialized. She made great friends with the flock and slept with Bubble every night on the coop floor. She passed away due to an oviductal impaction in December 2023.
Doug
Doug, a young adult (<1 yr) Australorp rooster who was found with Mo. Both were abandoned at Black Mines Regional Park, and rescued by an East Bay Regional Park worker. He lived a good life at Oak Rock Animal Preserve from February to May 2023, overlooking the hens and protecting them. He died protecting his flock from a predator.
Kotula
Kotula came to us as a 17 yr old game hen in May 2023 after her owners' home burned and they needed to move. She was the last of her flock of 4 with her last owners, and we know she had a wonderful life with them because it's so rare for chickens to live to her age. Many chickens in the egg-laying industry are euthanized at 1.5-2 yrs. Those in meat production don't live past 12 weeks. Average lifespan of a pet chicken is about 5-10 years, so Kotula did very well. She received acupuncture for arthritis for about a year, and passed away at 18 years old after a wonderful life of love and thinking she was a human.
Raven
Raven, a 9-10 yr old Australorp hen, came to us with Pearl in March 2023. Raven suddenly passed away shortly after arrival, and we were very saddened by her unexpected loss. We take comfort knowing she had a good life before arrival at Oak Rock Animal Preserve, and we are thankful she made her way to us so we could get to know her briefly.
Rosebud
Rosebud came to us in May 2023 as a1 yr old Golden Sexlink hen. She was rehomed with Daisy and Tulip, as it was better for the flock for the 3 of them to stay together. She developed a tumor of her reproductive tract and passed away from it in September 2024.
Rosie
Rosie was a 1 yr old Bielefelder hen who came to us in December 2022 with her sister Rainbow. She was a large chicken (normal for her breed) and was a hen who meant business with her flockmates, pushing to the front of the line for treats. She didn't let her chronic limp stop her from living a great life with us. She had chronic conditions related to her crop and arthritis, and she passed away July 2023, after 7 months with us.
Pearl
Pearl, an approximately 9-10 yr old White Leghorn, came with Raven in March 2023. She had a good life before and at Oak Rock Animal Preserve. After her arrival, she started laying eggs again after a 1+ yr hiatus. She became top hen in our flock, and was happy to keep everyone in order. She passed away suddenly one morning in June 2023. We were happy to provide her a good home in her last chapter.
THE MICE
5 wild mice
The geese were protecting their flock and killed 2 adult mice in April 2023. What we realized later in the day is that the 2 mice were parents to these 5 newborns, who were squeaking all day calling for their parents, and crawled out of the nest hungry and eyes not yet open. We took them in and fed them every 2 hours until their eyes opened at 2 weeks. We intended to raise them till they were old enough to be released back into the wild. However, Mother Nature had different plans for them and all 5 passed away unexpectedly within hours of each other when they turned about 2 weeks old. We are truly saddened by their loss, but we're glad we tried to give them a chance at life.
THE PIGEONS
Chloe
Chloe came to us in May 2023, with the Palomacy flock that was living in a foster aviary. Chloe was paired with Jade, and they spent a lot of time hanging out together in their nesting box. Chloe passed away in July 2024 from a tumor of her reproductive tract.
Chabot
Chabot is a pigeon who came to us with the Palomacy flock that was living in a foster aviary. She was rescued by Palomacy in 2019 at Chabot Lake, and was paired with Dolores. She didn't ever lay eggs under Palomacy's care our care, yet was the most vicious egg defender ever for her feggs. She passed away unexpectedly in August 2023.
Virtue
Virtue is a pigeon that came from OAS with the flock of 12. She was paired with Kwame, and lived with us for close to 1 yr befor passing away peacfully with Kwame by her side in Feb 2024.
THE QUAIL
Lil Chicken (L.C.)
LC, a Celadon Coturnix Quail, came to Oak Rock Animal Preserve after spending 5 months being fostered in a Bay Area veterinary hospital. Her original owner surrendered her to the vet hospital after needing to move out of the country. LC stayed with us for 13 months and received treatment for arthritis, until August 2024 when her arthritis worsened significantly.
THE WATERFOWL
Acorn
Acorn was a young female Runner duck mix who was found - with Kukui - by Oakland Animal Services (OAS) in September 2023, wandering on 98th Avenue in Oakland. She was safely captured by animal control officers and met Cashew at OAS, where they became a tight-knit flock of 3. She was killed by a predator in October 2023.
Almond
Almond, a young female White Chinese goose, was found shivering and hungry with Pistachio at Lake Merritt in February 2023. Oak Rock Animal Preserve received notification that 2 Pekin ducks needed a safe place. They arrived safe, but hungry, and we soon realized with their long necks, beak appearance, and size that they were small young geese. We helped Almond deal with chronic limping due to a malformed spine (unknown cause) discovered on radiographs after she was severely limping and laying down most of the time. She did very well with medications, water rehabilitation and acupuncture. She disappeared in August 2023 (we suspect due to a predator), and we miss her very much.
Carmelita
Carmelita, an adult female Muscovy duck, was spotted at Lake Merritt in February 2023, abandoned by her owner. It took several days, but rescuers caught her after enticing her with nuts, and brought her to Oak Rock Animal Preserve healthy, strong, but hungry. She is the 4th waterbird we added to our waterfowl flock. She was best friends with Esther and loved bathing and doing whatever Esther was doing. Carmelita was killed by a predator in October 2023.
Cashew
Cashew was a young female Pekin duck who came to us from Oakland Animal Services (OAS) in September 2023. A duck rescuer brought her to OAS after finding her injured and bleeding at Lake Merritt. Cashew recovered well at the shelter, and we were contacted to take her in to give her a permanent home. Cashew had trouble walking from her injuries, as well as from being a large Pekin duck, but we managed her discomfort with arthritis medications and she would speed around the duck yard. She loved to quack around with Kukui and Acorn, who were living with her at OAS. She was killed by a predator in October 2023.
Kukui
Kukui was a young female duck who was wandering 98th Avenue in Oakland with Acorn. The two were safely rescued by Animal Control and housed at OAS with Cashew until we were contacted to take all 3 happy ducks. Kukui loved to make a lot of noise when she was happy, sad, scared, excited, angry or when it was sunny, rainy, cloudy, or snowing. Her quack sounded like a giant, happy laugh. She was killed by a predator in October 2023.
Peanut
Peanut was a 7 yr old female Canada goose who was hand-raised by college students in Oregon who found her as a gosling. She was so imprinted on humans, that when she was released back into the wild, it was difficult for her to integrate with wild Canada geese and she found it hard to get along with them. She would hang out with humans most of the time. Because of her difficult integration, US Fish and Wildlife was going to euthanize her (an unfortunately necessary step for some wildlife that cannot be released back into the wild), but Peanut's friends found us instead. Peanut was fortunate enough to be able to make the interstate trip to her permanent home with us in March 2023. We were able to go through the process of getting a special license with US and California Fish & Wildlife to keep her; normally, migratory wild birds are protected and cannot be pets. She was killed by a predator in October 2023.
Pistachio
Pistachio was a male (gander) White Chinese goose. He and Almond were taken in by Oak Rock Animal Preserve in Feb 2023, at about 3 months of age after being dumped at Lake Merritt in Oakland, CA. Pistachio protected all the waterfowl with his alerts, wing flaps, and nibbles. All of our ducks loved him because of his confidence and his protection. He attacked many things, including buckets, hoses, boots and shoelaces. He was incredibly attached to humans and followed us around like a dog, and we learned how to deal with his antics with a laugh. He was such a special goose, but was killed by a predator in October 2023.
Yaya
Yaya ("Little Baby Girl" in Chinese) was a 3 yr old Pekin duck who came to us after being raised in a wonderful home with a lot of attention. Her owner was going off to college and needed Yaya to move to a home with other ducks. Yaya was very special to her family, and it was an honor they trusted us to take care of her, given how much love she received since being a duckling. She loved to eat bananas, get hugs, and hang out with her Pekin friends Wally and Mac. She was killed by a predator in October 2023.
Macadamia (Mac) and Walnut (Wally)
Mac and Wally were young (<3 months old) when they were abandoned at Lake Merritt in Oakland. Our duck rescuers saved them and brought them to Oak Rock Animal Preserve. They loved to swim like crazy underwater in the wading pool and get all the observers wet. Their favorite thing to do was forage under the sprinkler in the dirt, looking for bugs. They were killed by a predator in October 2023.
